Hormone Replacement for Women: Physician
Information on "Libido"
Dear Doctor and Health Professionals:
|
A recent episode of "Oprah" featured Judith
Reichman, M.D., a gynecologist who teaches and practices
at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Reichman
wrote and co-hosted the PBS series "Straight Talk
on Menopause," has served as keynote speaker for
the American Heart Association, and is the author of
"Im Too Young to Get Old - Health Care for
Women After Forty." She discussed the use of transdermal
testosterone ointment in treating women with libido
problems, and stated that a "formulating pharmacy"
must compound this medication
Testosterone supplementation within a physiological
range of .25 mg to .8 mg daily does not produce virlizing
side effects. When the tissue becomes healthy and local
testosterone receptors have been well-supplied, sensation
and libido return. We have included an article by Dr.
Susan Rako, author of The Hormone of Desire, which explains
the reasons why we recommend the following.
|
 |
Martin Avenue Pharmacy Inc. generally recommends using:
Methyltestosterone USP 0.25 mg / 0.1ml in
PLO gel (Pluronic Lecithin Organogel) or Testosterone Propionate
Emollient Cream 0.25% to .5% cream.
The directions to apply are:
| a. |
Methyltestosterone USP 0.25 mg / 0.1 ml PLO gel:
apply to vulva daily for two weeks then daily or every other
day to inner thigh for thirty days and continue as needed. |
| b. |
Testosterone Propionate Emollient Cream
0.25% to .5% cream: apply to vulva daily for two weeks
then daily or every other day to vulva for thirty days
and continue as needed. |
Once libido has improved and capacity for genital stimulation
has been established, a shift to an oral supplement (0.25-mg
testosterone) will usually maintain an adequate effect on
the genitals.
