Reasons Why a Veterinarian Uses
Compounded Medications:
In order to make these specialized
products, Martin Avenue Pharmacy has
chemicals and devices that are not available in most
pharmacies or compounding pharmacies. Our compounding
pharmacist has received extensive training in compounding
techniques and constantly goes to training workshops
in order to generate new techniques and innovations.
We can compound numerous other products and dosage forms
that are not listed on this page that are just right
for specific animals - from oral liquids to rectal suppositories,
from ear drops to
dusting powders.

Occasionally a medication does not sell enough for it
to be profitable for the drug manufacturer to keep the
drug on the market. Although this drug is removed from
the market by the manufacturer, it is still needed by
certain animal patients. Another example of how a drug
becomes unavailable is when the government sets a new
standard of safety or efficacy which the manufacturer
either cannot meet or cannot afford to do the research
to prove the worth of their product. Sometimes a drug
is made obsolete by newer and better drugs, only to
find out that a few animals or species respond better
to the old, discontinued drug. A good example of this
is Sodium Sulfadiazine or Sulfadizine powder which is
still needed, but has been discontinued by the brand
manufacturer. Martin Avenue Pharmacy has this discontinued
drug in stock. In these four situations compounding
is the answer.
Martin Avenue Pharmacy can obtain the necessary pharmaceutical
grade
chemicals, and from them, compound individualized dosage
forms that may be superior to the discontinued drug
formulation for the use in a specific animal.
Animal Medications from Human Drugs
Animals usually need the same drugs people do, but in
smaller doses. We can convert a 500mg, human dose, into
a 10 mg animal dose. Martin Avenue Pharmacy can also
convert a medication into a different dosage form for
the animal. Some different dosage forms are: capsules,
flavored liquid suspensions, medicated drinking water,
or chewable gummy bears.
Medication Not Flavored
Have you ever tried giving your animal a medication
and he just will not take it,
or have you placed a capsule in your dogs food and the
dog ate everything except
the capsule. By flavoring the medication, animals no
longer associate the
medication as a foreign object, but food. We prepare
medications in easy-to-give flavored dosage forms that
animals devour. Martin Avenue Pharmacy has over
100 flavors just dedicated to animals. Whether it be
tuna pastes for cats, fish, liver, beef, chicken, lobster,
clam, tuna, peanut butter, liver tablets for dogs, grape
flavored drops for exotic birds, banana custards for
exotics- you name it, we have
it. By flavoring your pets medication, your animals
drug can turn into a treat.
Combining Medications Into One Dose
Animals, like people, often need more than one medication.
Combining two or
three drugs into one dose makes administration of the
medication easier and
the animal happier. Also by combining two or more drugs
or ingredients made
by different manufacturers into one dose, it is more
cost effective for the owner.
We can also make a medication last longer in the body
so the medication does
not have to be administered as many times in one day.
Medicine Not Ideal Size
Just like with humans, manufactured animal medications
may come in only one
tablet size or in the wrong type of dosage form. Compounding
allows Martin Avenue Pharmacy to make the medication
in the right size for your animal. By doing this,
it can reduce the cost of animal care and make it easier
for the animal to take the medication.
Special Eye Drops
Veterinarians often have the need for special eye drops
- especially in dogs and
cats. These drops may contain several different medications
and are used for a
variety of problems, including allergies. Eye drops
are often not produced or manufactured commercially,
and human eye drops do not work. Therefore, the
only solution is compounding. Martin Avenue Pharmacy
can compound eye drops to contain exactly the concentration
of medicines needed for various animals.
Inconvenient to Use
Animals may have skin problems and require several different
creams or
ointments. The veterinarian may want the animal to have
two other skin
preparations. Using three medicines from separate containers
is inconvenient
to use and costly. We can compound all three medications
into a base that
contains the concentration needed from each of the three
original medications.
By doing this, the owner receives a more economical
and cost effective medication.
Creating Cost-Effective Alternatives when Medicating
an Animal
Making medications from pure chemicals instead of using
commercially available products can save a great deal
of money. If the major cost-factors in a product are
research, development, and labor, imagine what the absolute
cost of the drug
really is.
Diabetic Animals
Animals, just like humans, also can develop diabetes
or are born with the disease. Martin Avenue Pharmacy
can make oral hypoglycemics in the exact dose needed
by your animal, dilute insulin to make it easy to give,
make protamine zinc insulin
or make U40 and U100 dosages for dogs and especially
cats.
